What to pack for the hospital when having a baby?

A hospital packing guide for mothers to be...

When in the latter stages of pregnancy it is always a good idea to prepare yourself as best as possible for the day you have to give birth. Whether planning to have a hospital birth or not it is still advised you have a hospital bag all packed and ready to go just in case. Below is a short list that I have compiled to help aid pregnant women in what they should pack in their hospital bag.

For You

  • A comfortable pair of slippers - you will be encouraged to walk around after giving birth
  • A nightgown or robe - they are much better than the hospital provided gowns
  • Several changes of underwear - add in a few with a high waist, in case you have a caesarian section you don't want them rubbing against the incision
  • Sanitary pads - for the post-birth bleeding
  • Your toiletries bag - including deodorant, hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste
  • A nursing bra - and also some nursing pads
  • A few pairs of socks - to keep your feet nice and warm
  • Some money - to purchase any snacks or drinks you may want
  • Clothes to go home in - make sure they are going to fit you
  • CD/MP3 player - people often like the soothing sound of music
  • Books or magazines - they can help you pass time and relax in those early stages

For Your Baby

  • Newborn sized nappies - the hospital will usually supply some but best to have backups
  • A few different outfits - the baby might be bigger or smaller than expected
  • A car seat - you can't take your baby home without one!
  • A warm blanket - to keep your baby cosy

For Your Partner

  • Camera/video camera + charger - be sure to tell you partner what you do and do not want to be captured
  • Cell phone + charger - to call all your friends and family with the good news
  • Some snacks - the labour may go on for some time
  • A pillow and blanket - if your partner wants to stay overnight
  • Champagne - most hospitals allow a champagne toast after the baby is born
